Some of the supposed online trailers have convinced fans of a Warcraft 2 the movie is coming to Netflix soon.
First Warcraft movie – set in Blizzard’s darling World of Warcraft world – released in 2016. It brought this long-awaited conflict between the Alliance and the Horde to the big screen for the first time.
The first film did not live up to the lofty expectations that a Warcraft hit movie adaptation. It earned a mediocre $439 million at the worldwide box office and critically underperformed with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 29%.
Is Warcraft 2 coming to Netflix?
The fans are convinced Warcraft 2 will be released on Netflix after a couple of trailers appeared online.
The first of these two alleged film marketing pieces was released in September 2023, teasing the film by title Warcraft 2: The Lich King. Nine months later, in early June, another “trailer” for another Warcraft movie, Warcraft 2: The Final Chapterfollowed.
Both quotes from uncredited glimpses teased an epic sequel to the 2016 original, hinting at more Alliance vs. Horde action and accompanying the iconic film’s arrival. World of Warcraft character, the Lich King.
While both of these trailers are compelling, they are neither real nor Netflix-based Warcraft a sequel is in the works.
The promos are fan-made and have found a home on Foxstar Media’s YouTube page, known for well-edited concept trailers rather than legitimate marketing pieces.
Instead of performing new material from anywhere Warcraft 2they largely use shots from the first Warcraft film and bits and pieces of it World of Warcraftn’s iconic hyper-realistic cinematic trailers.
Is there a Warcraft 2 movie happening?
Just because these two Warcraft 2 trailers of the movie are fake, that doesn’t mean all hope is lost for a sequel.
Warcraft Director Duncan Jones previously hinted that he was working under the assumption that a sequel to his 2016 flop was in the works. In 2017, he told fans on X (formerly Twitter) that he had to hold back some narratives when they “would have been in the movie 2” (via Nerdist).
Since then, Jones’s Warcraft the prospects for the future have obviously faltered. In 2018, a filmmaker said a sequel set in his vision of the beloved video game series “doesn’t look good.”
However, just because Jones may not be in it doesn’t mean otherwise Warcraft the movie will never happen.
Noted entertainment insider Daniel Richtman (via Knighted Media) reported in 2020 that another Warcraft the film was in development at Legendary Pictures.
Although such a project has not been officially greenlit, Warcraft 2 teased again in April 2024 Warcraft franchise director John Hight.
In a conversation with IGN, Hight teased the idea of another Warcraft the movie would be “Certainly interesting” but Blizzard is ultimately the first company in games:
“(It would be) certainly interesting. We make games and I think games will always be at our core, so that’s where Warcraft is focused. I don’t want to fall into the ‘I’m going to be a filmmaker now’ trap. .’ I think leave it to people who really know what they’re doing.”
But he wouldn’t let go of the idea of another film adaptation. A Blizzard executive noted that if they find the right person for the project, then “absolutely” it could happen:
“If we can find talent from other media fields that share a love and passion for ‘Warcraft’, absolutely. But I think unfortunately I’ve seen some of my colleagues fall in love with the idea of becoming filmmakers and exploiting the film. Owning the IPR or controlling a share of the IP gives them a chance to get into filmmaking . But so many professionals have been doing this for so many years, (and) there could be dozens if not a hundred movies that can do it. So much better that I wouldn’t want someone just making movies and trying to build a game like “Warcraft”. right, huh?
Although Warcraft 2 remains unannounced, it looks like it’s only a matter of time before another Warcraft movie gets the green light. World of Warcraft is a massive IP, so it would be naive to think that the original plan was a one-and-done movie.
