Businesses wishing to move to the Square Mile are being encouraged to use a new interactive map that identifies areas that could be suitable for opening hospitality venues, markets, premises with extended licensing hours, and holding events.

The Licensing Interactive Map is unique in bringing together a wide range of information for the first time and in one place, including:

·       existing locations of licensed premises, markets, pop-ups (including licensing hours)

·       existing venues with pavement licences

·       residential locations

·       data on planned developments

·       City’s green or open spaces

·       transport hubs, including rail, bus, London Underground stations, taxi ranks, and bike racks

The map, which may also benefit existing and new City residents, has been developed by the Corporation’s Licensing Team and the organisation’s London Geographic Information System (GIS) Team.

The map is available to view on the City Corporation’s Interactive Maps landing page – Interactive maps – – and will be updated regularly as new data becomes available.

Until now, Corporation Licensing Officers have provided information on request and directed potential licensees to suitable areas, using local knowledge which is discussed and shared through the pre-application process or via other enquires made to the team.

The Licensing Interactive Map supports the aims and objectives of Destination City, the Corporation’s growth strategy for the Square Mile as a world-leading business and leisure location.

Through Destination City, the City Corporation is delivering a seven-day-a-week Square Mile that is a global magnet for businesses and residents, visitors, and workers alike. Attracting new businesses and people to a dynamic and thriving City is vital for the Square Mile’s future.

Corporation Policy Chairman, Chris Hayward, said:

“I am confident that this new interactive map will be an important resource for businesses and residents alike.”

“The Square Mile has experiences to cater for everyone, attracting people to spend time in the City and supporting our retail and leisure offers .

Chairman of the Corporation’s Licensing Committee, James Tumbridge said:

“At the heart of this project is our strong commitment to encouraging good responsible business and investment in the City, as part of our wider ambitions for economic growth.

“The Square Mile is open for business and we are building on its success to make it a thriving destination with increased footfall and spend. We are hoping to see ever more diversity in the offer, and to keep people wanting to invest in the City.”

The Corporation has a statutory duty to administer the Licensing Act 2003, which balances the needs of licensed premises with protections for City residents, workers, other Square Mile businesses, and visitors.

The Square Mile is home to almost 1,000 outstanding licensed premises, with 16 of them benefitting from 24-hour licenses, and over 300 serving alcohol after midnight. Over 140 pubs, cafés, bars, and restaurants offer al fresco seating, boosting the City’s vibrancy.
