The First Officer has been a key player in the Bravo spin-off for years, but he’s also been a nuisance. Gary’s constant drinking led him into some sticky situations, including two different love triangles and a lack of consent in his relationship with Ashley Martin. Although he is often competent at his job, he is not the best leader on a sailboat.

Sailboat below deck season 5 has just started, but there was drama before the season started. Gary’s allegations of sexual misconduct led to a fan backlash against his involvement in the current season, with much-loved lead engineer Colin Macrae deciding to leave the show after last year’s disastrous love triangle. Captain Glenn Shephard is trying to hold everything together, but Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher seems to be on the verge of falling apart after her relationship crumbled last season. I think Gary will get through easily this season and not have to atone for his actions.

Instead of apologizing, Gary took to social media to defend himself, claiming the allegations were false and made up for attention. Daisy’s drama seems more likely to dominate Sailboat below deck season 5 than Gary’s past mistakes. She is still struggling with her unresolved feelings about Colin leaving the show and her changed friendship with Gary. Before they secretly met, Daisy and Gary were good friends who worked well together Sailboat below deck. Now Daisy feels lonely and emotionally exhausted after the events of last season. Even in the midst of sexual assault allegations, Daisy stood up for Gary. He also had to deal with his sister’s near fatal accident in Thailand.

It’s also in Bravo’s best interest to focus more on Daisy’s relationship drama like Gary’s troubled past. They are not innocent in his story on and off screen, as Bravo producers have continued to hire Gary for future seasons. Allegations of sexual misconduct are by no means the first time Gary has committed incendiary crimes on the show. His ineffective leadership affected the anchor scene of Tom Pearson. His problem drinking contributed to two love triangles and a situation with Ashley. I don’t think so Sailboat below deck benefits from focusing on Gary’s mistakes.
