Shopping for your kids’ shoes when the new term starts can be a nightmare, but one mum has shared her top tip to make it a whole lot easier. Yes, dragging your kids on a shopping spree can sometimes feel like more trouble than it’s worth. But when they need new clothes or shoes, it seems you have no choice but to bring them in for fitting. Or do you?

A savvy mom has shared a genius and simple hack that allows you to buy your kids perfectly fitting shoes without taking them to the stores. The best part is that you only need one item to pull off this trick – a piece of string.

In a video posted on TikTok, a user named @organisedandsimplified4u showed how you simply need to take a string and hold it against your child’s foot. Measure the full length of their foot and then cut the lace to size, the Mirror reports. Then repeat the process with another piece of string across the widest part of the foot.

You should now have two pieces of string that accurately measure the size of your child’s feet. Just put the string in the bag, and the next time you’re out buying them shoes, you can use the string to measure the shoes. If the laces fit snugly inside the shoe, neither too long nor too short, it is the right size for your child’s foot.

This trick is especially useful for younger children whose feet grow quickly and change shoe sizes frequently so just picking up a shoe you think will fit doesn’t always work.

The mother’s clever trick was met with applause from commenters, who also chimed in with their own clever tips. Some suggested tracing the child’s foot on cardboard to test shoe sizes without having to bring children. One commenter recalled, “My mom used to save cardboard and trace the feet, write names and ages on the back, and take those shoe shopping trips instead of multiple kids.”

Another was keen to test the idea: “Definitely doing this, it will save me a lot of tantrums at the shops.” And a third praised the suggestion for its practicality: “It’s actually really smart for my boys who hate shopping.”
