Living in London is a privilege, and for Express reporter Adam Toms, he considers himself fortunate to call the capital home. There’s never a shortage of activities, from weekend catch-ups with mates to solo ventures during the week.
Adam, who resides in Wandsworth, has Richmond—dubbed the “happiest place in the UK”—right on his doorstep. The district has repeatedly secured top positions in surveys measuring Britain’s most desirable and satisfied communities, and the reasons are abundantly clear.
It’s a prosperous and leafy area, with a centre brimming with independent shops alongside premium national and international retailers. Small wonder that famous faces including David Attenborough, Amanda Holden and Tom Hardy have chosen to settle there.
Local inhabitants are well used to rumours swirling about high-profile figures purchasing properties in the district, and recognise why those with considerable wealth seek to move there.
In recent times, the borough has attracted countless visitors eager to see filming locations for Apple TV sitcom Ted Lasso, reports the Mirror.
Adam travelled there to speak with residents about a recent daylight robbery at a jewellery establishment, which was filmed by shocked witnesses.
Two individuals shattered the shop’s window with a sledgehammer and escaped with valuable items, despite intervention attempts from staff inside.
Richmond has historically seen low crime levels, but locals now feel unsettled following the incident. Adam was told that the street’s infamous reputation has made it increasingly vulnerable, attracting visitors from across the world following its television appearances.
This causes some concern amongst business owners, as there’s no way of knowing exactly who might be amongst the crowds.
However, the situation was described as a double-edged sword, as tourists inevitably bring custom to local shops and businesses.
One shop manager admitted he’s constantly worried about a potential break-in, pointing to rampant shoplifting across the area.
In December, Met Police statistics showed 28 shoplifting incidents, 24 violent and sexual offences, 23 anti-social behaviour incidents and 17 classified as “other theft”.
It’s a stark reminder that no area is completely safe, regardless of how wealthy it might be, as criminals seem increasingly brazen and unashamed across the country.
