I am not a naturally organized person. Left to my own devices, I would lose my phone, all contact information, my laptop, bag, every single story anyone has written for, and probably my shoes. So when I travel, I have to make things as easy as possible: line up the travel packing cubes.

This is one of those units I hear about down the grapevine, where my best friend gets the recommendation from her friend who also loves to travel. We both prepared for the trip of a lifetime with G Adventures: basically, they pair you up with a local guide and a group of other travelers — some solo, some in groups — to take you around destinations ripped straight from the fields of Elysium .

I can’t recommend them enough – our trip took us from Bangkok, Thailand, down south through Malaysia and ending in Singapore. The problem? There’s a lot of moving around, which means my spaghetti-like brain has more opportunities to drop everything in my backpack.

That’s when she told me about the travel packing cubes. The £12 pack (down from £16) comes in four different sizes, as well as bags for your laundry, toiletries and wet or dirty clothes. They are also available in six colors – dark grey, black, blue, navy, pink and beige – as well as larger sizes with 10 pieces. These come with an extra toothbrush cup and travel shoe bag.

It’s a simple concept but revolutionary. I put all my shorts in one, vests in another and a few smarter clothes in a final one. Then when I needed something, instead of trawling through mountains of clothes, there were five bags.

With a transparent side, it also streamlines the situation. In terms of convenience, they are perfect. Since they fit in suitcases, this will make unpacking much easier, even if you live in one place.

Although the material of the cubes is quite good (and waterproof), the zippers are a bit flimsy. At the end of the three-week trip, my Hulk-smash hands managed to break two of the zippers. So just be a little more sensitive than me if you go in and out of them.

She wrote: “Amazon sells a Ryanair travel bag that comes in 28 colours. You can choose between a shoulder strap or no strap, and my lavender bag – complete with strap – arrived at my door the next day thanks to Amazon Prime.

At first inspection, the bag looked like nothing more than a gym bag, albeit with a handy passport compartment on the front. But when I started packing, its Mary Poppins qualities soon revealed themselves.

No matter how many dresses I rolled up and stuffed in, the bag never seemed to fill up. Even the exorbitant amount of underwear I added (just in case, as always) didn’t add to the bulk of the bag.”

I used the £12.99 travel packing cubes from Amazon. However, Mountain Warehouse sells a set of three for the same price.
