I’ve never been to the Basque Country, but after tasting La Maritxu’s cheesecake, it’s now on my bucket list. It all started in 2021 when Lucia, a Basque native, wanted to bring an authentic taste of her culture to London.
La Maritxu opened its first store in Hyde Park, and its Basque cheesecake quickly became insanely popular and took TikTok by storm. Now they’ve opened a second location in Soho’s Kingly Court, offering even more Londoners a taste of this creamy treat.
Although the address points to Kingly Court, the storefront is actually on Kingly Street. As a huge fan of Basque cheesecake, I was delighted to stumble upon this place.

As I stepped inside, I watched the staff skillfully cut the cheesecakes, which are made fresh every morning at their Hyde Park store. The cheesecakes are stored at the perfect temperature in the refrigerator to preserve their delicate texture.
One bite and I was surprised by the layers of flavor: I could taste caramel and lemon notes, even though the cake is made of just cheese, cream cheese, eggs and flour.
The texture was equally impressive, with a creamy center and a crumbly edge, topped with a lightly burnt crust. This is hands down the best Basque cheesecake I’ve had in London.
A disc costs £6, which is a bit expensive, but it’s ideal for a special treat. You can also grab a whole cake for £40 – it would definitely steal the show at any dinner party.
Pair your cheesecake with a coffee from Redemption Roasters, an independent brand in London. For £8.50 you can enjoy a slice and a hot drink – a deal I’d definitely recommend grabbing!
Other customers seemed equally impressed and devoured their slices in no time. I even heard people recommending it to their friends. So next time you’re in Soho, do yourself a favor and visit La Maritxu.
