Tourists flock to Westminster to catch a glimpse of the iconic Houses of Parliament, but there’s a lesser-known vantage point on the south bank of the Thames that will help you avoid the hordes of people. Located in Lambeth North, the Garden Museum offers a hidden view of the world famous landmark.

Originally built in 1377 and restored in the 19th century, the museum’s tower was once part of a church dedicated to St Mary Lambeth. The church was demolished in 1851, but the tower remains as the oldest part of the Garden Museum.

Today it houses a viewing platform with breathtaking views of London. Not only can you clearly see the Houses of Parliament, but also the River Thames and the London skyline, including the Shard.

You get a lesser known view of the Houses of Parliament at the top of this tower

I arrived just as the museum opened at 10am and had the tower all to myself for a while before a few others joined. Thankfully, it remained calm, as the tower only allows seven visitors at a time, ensuring it never feels crowded.

To check it out, you need to go into the Garden Museum, which explores and celebrates British gardens and gardening, and ask for a ticket to the tower. It’s just £4, or included in your museum entry.

The small door to the tower is just behind the museum reception, which takes you to a narrow, winding staircase with 131 steps – you really have to earn the view.

The steps are uneven, so be careful and grab the handrail when going up the spiral staircase. However, the view is worth every careful step.

If you’re visiting the Garden Museum, or even if you’re just nearby, don’t miss the chance to climb this tower. Immerse yourself in a hidden part of London’s rich history and enjoy the unforgettable sights.

Access to the tower is during the museum’s opening hours. It closes 30 minutes before sunset during the winter months.

Find the vantage point in the Garden Museum, off Lambeth Palace Road, London, SE1 7LB. The museum is open every day from 10am to 5pm, and an adult ticket is £15.
