After much consideration, author Samuel Jones finally succumbed to the Black Friday sales last year and bought a dehumidifier. It has been so effective that he is considering getting another one. During the colder months we often notice condensation on our windows, so this seemed like the perfect solution.

In the past, Samuel used a window cleaner to remove the excess moisture, but it was quite a pain and a bit inconvenient to constantly adjust the blinds and remember to charge and drain the battery. So when he noticed that dehumidifiers were part of the Black Friday deals, he decided to take the plunge – and 10 months later, it’s turned out to be a great decision. Here’s his review of the device, originally reported in The Express.

I bought the Russell Hobbs 10L dehumidifier (£129 at Dunelm but sold out or £118.95 at Amazon) and it immediately made a noticeable difference. Not only did it get rid of condensation on the window overnight, but it now means I can dry clothes on an air conditioner on rainy days, without having to turn on the heat.

You simply turn it on, close the door to the room it’s in, and it starts working. It takes quite a few hours, especially with thicker items like towels, but it’s nice to be able to save some money while energy costs are still high. If some thick items are really wet, I just get the remaining moisture out in the dryer, but it takes a lot less time and saves a lot of electricity.

It also means the house doesn’t have the dreaded clothes draped over the radiators over the winter, which is a real pet hate of mine. You might be wondering about the cons. Well, dehumidifiers aren’t exactly a steal to buy and this particular model is somewhat loud.

It has a ‘mute’ button which reduces noise, but labeling it ‘quiet’ seems a bit of a misnomer as it’s far from silent. A more appropriate description for that mode would be “silent”, as it reduces the noise but does not completely mute it. Personally, I’m not too bothered by the sound. I sleep with a fan on during the summer and don’t mind the white noise, so it’s not that different.

There are also plenty of cheaper ones available, but a common drawback is that many have smaller water tanks, meaning you have to empty the water more often. This probably won’t be a problem if you plan to use it in a small room, or can empty the tank every few hours.

The Pro Breeze Dehumidifier, available on Amazon for £36.99, is a lightweight and portable unit with a 0.5L capacity, ideal for homes that need to move it around during the day. However, potential buyers should note that 12% of reviewers gave this product a one-star rating, and some claimed it broke after just a few weeks. On the other hand, over half of the customers gave it a five-star rating, indicating a high level of satisfaction with the product.
