Salford-based brewer and pub retailer Hydes has completed a £235,000 refurbishment of the Abel Heywood, a boutique hotel in Manchester’s vibrant Northern Quarter.
This latest investment builds on Hydes’ extensive seven-figure investment program in its pub property in 2024, which included a £200,000 refurbishment of The Abel Heywood pub in February last year.
The hotel premises of The Abel Heywood, purchased by Hydes in 2014, will be renovated in stages starting in January, and is expected to be completed in early March. During the renovation, many rooms will be available, while the pub, bar and dining areas will operate as normal.
A favorite with visitors to Manchester, the on-site boutique hotel boasts a remarkable 99% occupancy rate and is consistently ranked as one of the best rated hotels in the city.
Appointed as manager of The Abel Heywood in December 2014, Alex Allan has helped make the Hydes Brewery-owned pub a standout destination in Manchester’s famous Northern Quarter. Under his leadership, it has secured its reputation as one of the most popular places to stay in the city center.
Hydes appointed Alex Allan to lead the Abel Heywood team after acquiring the property in 2014, transforming the once almost derelict, fire-damaged former textile warehouse into the striking landmark it is today. After a multi-million pound investment, The Abel Heywood opened its doors in the Northern Quarter in December 2014 and quickly became a popular destination for locals and visitors alike.
Alex Allan said: “Abel Heywood is a very popular place for city center drinkers, day trippers and visitors to Manchester who want to stay somewhere quirky and cool.
“After ten years of Abel Heywood’s management, it has become such an integral part of the operation of the northern quarter. It’s great for the local economy and brings a lot of business to this part of town. Following the successful refurbishment of the pub last year and a significant investment by Hydes, a full refurbishment of the hotel will give it the modernization it deserves and hopefully have the same impact as the investment in the pub.
Adam Mayers, Managing Director of Hydes, commented: “The Abel Heywood is a central location for Hydes and this second round of investment in less than 12 months continues our commitment to the ongoing refurbishment of all pubs in our estate. With its adjacent 15-room boutique hotel, it is a firm favorite in the north of the city and this further investment will the opportunity for it to build on the success and reputation it has achieved since we first bought it over ten years ago.
