A popular south London pie and pastry shop is to close after 116 years in business, the owners have announced. Harrington’s Pie And Mash on Selkirk Road, in Tooting, will soon close its doors.

The family-owned company said the decision “wasn’t easy”, but they needed to “move forward”. They wrote on Instagram: “As you can imagine it has not been an easy decision for me and the family to make, in fact it has been very upsetting when it has been in the family for 116 years.

“But unfortunately as a family we have decided we have to move on so unfortunately the property is for sale and once it has sold we will be closing our doors but until we have sold we will still be open selling hot pie and mash. for all our beloved customers to enjoy. We want to thank you all for your custom and all the wonderful memories over the years.

“Once I have more information I will update all social media, but until then we look forward to seeing you all. Once again, thank you! It’s been a pleasure.”

The establishment, which first opened in 1908, quickly became a pillar of the community. So it’s hardly surprising that customers were saddened by the news.

One Instagram user commented: “This is incredibly upsetting news, our family have always visited your pie and mash shop, it was my children’s favorite meal! I even walk all the way down from Birmingham now to have a delicious pie and mash – I’ll have to squeeze in one more visit before you go.”

“I can’t believe it, our family have been customers since it opened,” said another, while a third added: “Wow, all my kids had their first meal there as babies. I’m so sorry you’re closing – I hope and pray that a pie and mash lover buys it and keeps the tradition going.”
