The 137-year-old Hammersmith Bridge is due to close for 24 hours once a weekend over a six-week period. Starting on October 25, the bridge will shut for a 24-hour period every Friday until November 29which will mean pedestrians and cyclists will not be able to pass through.

The closures are required to lift the cast iron bridge and replace corroded parts and replace them with rubber bearings. Once this work has been carried out on the Grade II* listed bridge, it will then have further refurbishment carried out so the entire span of it can open up to cyclists, pedestrians and scooter riders.

The bridge completely closed in 2020and has not allowed access to vehicles ever since. It was reopened to pedestrians and cyclists in 2021, and the new work being carried out will work towards a new experience for pedestrians and those walking along, who are currently confined to a bit of a tight squeeze when heading across due to the work taking up the majority of the space.

So, if you find yourself on a stroll by the river on a crisp Saturday morning throughout the autumn and fancy a quick cut across to the other side, you’ll need to take an alternative route further down the path.
