Gordon Ramsay says he’s ‘lucky to be here’ after a serious bike crash in Connecticut earlier this week.

The chef delivered a personal video message to his followers, on both Instagram and X, pleading the importance of wearing a helmet and stressing that this saved his life.

In the video, Ramsay lifted his chef’s jacket to showcase significant purple bruising across his entire torso. The post also included ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos, showing a visibly crushed helmet and torn clothing.

Whilst he ‘did not break any bones or suffer any major injuries,’ reassuring followers, the video shows the extreme bruising that resulted from the ‘really bad accident’. In the chef’s own words, it has left him ‘looking like a purple potato.’

Ramsay took to social media on Saturday 15 June, delivering a message to parents in the run up to Father’s Day, sharing this ‘very important message for all the dads out there.’ He continued his message, saying: ‘I want to wish you all a happy Father’s Day, but please, please, please wear a helmet. If I didn’t, honestly, I wouldn’t be here now.’

‘I don’t care how short the journey is. I don’t care … these helmets cost money, but they’re crucial, even with the kids, a short journey, they’ve got to wear a helmet.’

The chef, who can be seen to be visibly shaking throughout the video, said: ‘I’m lucky to be standing here. I’m in pain. It’s been a brutal week. And I’m sort of getting through it.’

He was sure to thank the trauma surgeons and nurses at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, Connecticut, who had looked after him following the crash, but pleaded the importance of safety, saying that he was ‘most thankful’ for the helmet that saved his life.
