It’s certainly not everyday that your morning commute is interrupted by the appearance of two life-sized movie monsters. This morning, however, Londoners were left pretty flabbergasted at the sight of two humongous Godzilla and Kong sculptures lurking in and around the Thames. Only in London, hey?

Godzilla’s spikes were spotted emerging from the river, whilst Kong’s gigantic hand was seen crushing a red phone box on the South Bank. The spectacular stunt is in celebration of the new movie, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empirewhich is being released this week. The colossal creatures made a rather alarming entrance in to London at 2am this morning, and will be at large in the capital until 7pm this evening (March 25).

The sculptures are true to scale – so pretty flippin’ massive – and collectively weigh over a tonne. Godzilla spans a whopping 20 metres (the size of a tennis court, FYI) and incorporates over 70 pulsing pink lights. Meanwhile, Kong’s right hand stands at nearly five metres tallwith his head spanning seven metres in diameter. Kong is also covered in over 30m of fur, creating a (perhaps a slightly too) realistic finish.

The impressive beasts are the result of two months of human labour. A team of 40 people have been working tirelessly to create the sculptures, spending a staggering 6,326 hours on the project over the past two months. 45 days were spent sculpting Godzilla’s head and body and it took 51 days to paint both sculptures. Oh my God…zilla, indeed.

Above the epic creations, the iconic OXO tower has also been transformed into the ‘GxK’ Tower for two nights to mark the occasion.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire filmmaker, Adam Wingard, said: “A lot of the magic of the Monsterverse comes from watching these Titans battling it out in real world surroundings. To see Godzilla and Kong actually accessing Hollow Earth portals into London just really blew me away! I felt like I did as a kid, watching the Toho classics on a Saturday afternoon.”

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is coming to cinemas this Friday, March 29. The Godzilla and Kong sculptures can be seen in London until 7pm tonight (March 25).
