If the new update is to be believed, fans might be waiting for a while God of War 6 to be released.
Created by Sony’s Santa Monica Studio, the mythology-based action epic has spanned five main games, a PS3 prequel, two handheld expansions, and an upcoming streaming adaptation.
Simply put, Sony Santa Monica’s primary development team has been living in the land of Kratos in one form or another for a very long time, releasing only god of war games since 2005.
The release prospects of God of War 6 are uncertain
According to new information from Sony Santa Monica god of war the team may not work God of War 6 Next.
An update was spotted on one’s LinkedIn profile God of War: Ragnarok studio developers (via ResetEra). The developer’s “info” section (which has since changed) said they were brought to the team to see “after the entire Character Development pipeline on the new IP:”
“Santa Monica Studios offered me the opportunity to return as Character Supervisor to take care of the entire Character Development pipeline with their new IP, so here I am excited to be back, working with the crew again and working on characters in video games together.”
This is the first hint that Santa Monica is working on something other than god of war franchise from Ragnarok released for PlayStation 5 in 2022.
If that happens, it would likely mean that there won’t be a next game from the studio God of War 6 (the third soft reboot of the series in Norse mythology) and the wait for the title is longer than some may have expected.
However, it should be remembered that Sony Santa Monica has grown to the size that it likely has multiple teams, so there is always the possibility that the next god of war The game is also being developed alongside this new IP.
This would mean that you have to wait for the next one god of warbut one not nearly as long as if there was only one team in the studio.
god of war (2018) director Cory Barlog specifically vacated the helm of its sequel and stepped into the role of executive producer Ragnarok.
Many assumed this was because he had moved on to another title god of war franchise, set it up as the studio’s next title while helping out in a larger sense Ragnarok.
The last fans heard from Barlog, he sent a personal X (formerly Twitter) profile in March 2024, which said he had “(saw) some early things come together” in his new project in the studio and it is “damn brilliant:”
“I see some early things coming together with this thing that I’m working on right now, and damn, the people that I get to work with at Sony Santa Monica are just so damn great.
Video games are cool.”
Although not confirmed to be this new game, it seems likely that this is the case.
Will God of War 6 ever be released?
This mention of a new IP isn’t at all surprising considering how long Sony Santa Monica has focused almost exclusively on god of warbut it will come as a shock to the waiting fans god of war 6 with eager anticipation.
Don’t worry though, the second game in the series is almost certainly coming, it can just wait a bit.

According to the behind-the-scenes video released before the latest god of war there was a lot of discussion about the sequel “whether norse saga was a trilogy or two games”, but god of war (2018) director Cory Barlog finally called:
“We debated a lot about whether the Norse saga would be a trilogy or two games. Obviously there were pros and cons to either approach. So we waited for Cory Barlog to weigh in, and he did, and he said, ‘Let’s do it in two.’
And at the same time Ragnarok was largely the end of one chapter, it also felt like the beginning of another.
The sequel left series character Kratos and his son Atreus, who players had come to know over the course of the two Norse Saga games, heading off on separate journeys.
Some had assumed that the next god of war the game would pick up with Atreus (aka Loki) in the Nine Realms and further advance the Norse story. Others thought God of War 6 Kratos would appear again perhaps in a new kingdom of the gods, such as ancient Egypt or Rome.
Whatever it is, there are still plenty of narrative discs floating around for Sony Santa Monica to pick up.
Also, you can’t forget how the last two games in the series were rated and how well they sold.
god of war (2018) and Ragnarok is exactly 94 on Metacritic, and as of November 2023, the franchise had sold over 66 million games worldwide.
Simply put, the series is still one of PlayStation’s biggest moneymakers, so it would be naive to think that another release wouldn’t be on the horizon at some point.
It could take a few years longer as the studio tries not to step on their own two feet with all this seemingly new IP project.
