London’s a washout. It always has been, and always will be. Sure, we’ve enjoyed a spot of sunshine here and there in March, but this country’s default is grey. So we may as well embrace it with the infamous April showers around the corner. With this London pub handing out free pints when it inevitably rains in April.

What are April showers?

The notorious weather phenomenon mostly occurs in the United Kingdom and Ireland. It’s down to the jet stream moving northward and allowing for large depressions that bring strong winds and heavy rain from the Atlantic. It’s not as bad as it sounds, however, as the proverb goes, ‘April showers bring May flowers’.

How do I get a free pint?

I could ramble about the weather all day (In France, it’s called ‘Giboulées de mars’ aka ‘March showers’), but I won’t. You only wanted a free pint, not a meteorology lesson. Greene King Pubs has pledged to buy the biggest round in the country when they detect April showers by giving away up to 100,000 free pints.

The Anchor Bankside in Southwark, which is “the sole survivor of the river taverns of Shakespeare’s time”, is one of six Greene King Pubs across the UK to have installed rain detectors. The first to detect rainfall (during April 3 – 10) will activate up to 100,000 free pints for pub-goers across the UK.

The move comes as Greene King Pubs research revealed the country’s opinions on pub gardens in spring. It found that nearly 31% of Brits dash inside from the beer garden at the first sign of bad weatherwhile 18% admit to wearing sunglasses and winter coats to ensure they’re prepared for all weather conditions.

Larry Lambwho will deliver weather broadcasts for Greene King on April 3, said: “The pub garden is like a sanctuary away from the chaos of everyday; it’s somewhere to sit, to chat, to meet others and to simply enjoy being outside. In spring, it can be really fabulous as the crocuses and daffodils start blooming and people start to dust off their jazzy summer wardrobe… only for the rain to come down!”

Rain detectors have also been installed in Greene King Pubs at The Skyrack in Leeds, The Old Schoolhouse in Glasgow, Malt House in Birmingham, The Bay Horse in Bristol and The Boat House in Wallingford. Greene King Pub’s Instagram will announce the first detection of rain. You’ll then have 48 hours to head to the nearest pub and say, “It’s raining, please pour me a free pint” to claim your free pint.
