Beneath The Walrus pub in Brighton awaits a hidden gem: a lush cabaret club with velvet booths, its own bar and an intimate stage perfect for partying. Although Brighton bursts with creativity every May during the Fringe Festival, the city offers soul-nourishing drag, comedy and cabaret all year round if you know where to look.

On a busy Wednesday night, we found ourselves in this secret paradise for Felix & Friends, a sold-out variety show featuring people of all ages. Promising a delightful mix of gore, comedy, music and general mischief, the night offered charisma, uniqueness, nerves and talent in spades, topped off with a touch of Brighton eccentricity.

Felix Le Freak, Brighton Drag Idol winner and our charismatic host anchored the evening with warmth, quick wit and infectious energy that kept the audience engaged from start to finish. In addition to the show, Felix dazzled as a performer and gave the audience a peak “behind the curtain” in a brand new song.

Their original number ‘Murder in the Dressing Room’ – written just 24 hours earlier – was a particular highlight, blending camp theater into a polished pop song with clever wordplay. Catchy, dirty and undeniably hilarious, it’s a testament to Felix’s creative brilliance. If that wasn’t enough, their wit, rap verses and humor ensured the crowd was in stitches.

Excitingly, Felix and friends will begin a monthly residency at The Walrus starting February 7, 2025. In the meantime, fans can catch Felix in action at Ironworks Studios for a party on December 14th.

The evening was a kaleidoscope of talent, with each act offering something completely unique. Brighton sparkled as a line-up of dazzling performers delivered an unforgettable mix of comedy, cabaret and clowning:

Daphne: International cabaret sensation and trans icon Daphne opened the show against camp glamor and unapologetic irreverence. His impeccable lip sync, set to hilariously cheeky The weakest link soundtrack, was full of charisma and sass. He owned the stage with every gesture and wink, leaving the audience in awe.

Pearl the clown: A small but mighty gem combines drag, neo-burlesque and clowning into a whimsical, sparkling show. With bejeweled grins and mischievous charm, Gem showed why she is the deserving winner of Brighton’s Big Drag Pageant. Their artistry is as quirky as it is fascinating.

Sallyann Fellowes: Multi-award winning comedian Sallyann delivered a series that shone with wit and authenticity. As a quirky, neuromorphic voice, he masterfully turned the idiosyncrasies of life into comedic gold. His sharp observations and relatable humor – honed thanks to his Leicester Square New Comedian of the Year 2023 win – had the audience laughing.

Nicky Vere-Compton: Bringing anarchic energy and a power baritone, Nicky mixed musical comedy with biting stand-up. Their performance radiated authenticity and humor, leaving an indelible impression on the audience.

Mikee Martelle: Brighton stand-up favourite, Mikee closed the show with bold tales of love, loss and lust. His lively storytelling and razor-sharp performance proved why he’s a beloved fixture on the local comedy circuit.

Felix & Friends is a joyous celebration of quirky creativity and community, offering a refreshing mix of sophisticated acts and anarchic fun. With a diverse roster and Felix’s unrivaled charm at the helm, this show promises to remain a jewel in Brighton’s cabaret scene. Don’t miss their monthly residency from February 2025.
