Before the war, Ghoul was Cooper Howard

Warning – This article contains spoilers Drop.

Although it is not known exactly when Walton Goggins’ Cooper Howard was born, he was once a hero who served under the US Marine Corps before the Great War dropped nuclear weapons on what was left of America.

In particular, he fought in the battle to defend Alaska against the People’s Republic of China, giving him experience with the T-45 power armor, the preferred armor of the Brotherhood of Steel.

After being dishonorably discharged, he began a career in Hollywood as an actor. This journey proved to be incredibly successful, leading him to a much more questionable career choice: shooting commercials for Vault-Tec.

Cooper’s face became synonymous with Holve and the iconic images of him giving the thumbs up.

While working those commercials as a favor to his wife, with whom he has a child, he began to question the nature of Vault-Teh itself, the company he worked for – something you’d never expect a villain to do.

However, things became questionable when his suspicions led him to spy on his wife. One thing led to another, and he learned that his wife was directly involved in possible plans to nuke America itself, with the intention of rebooting all of humanity under Vault-Tec’s control.

Needless to say, this didn’t go over too well. His marriage broke down, leading to a divorce. However, the world had bigger problems as the bombs soon fell.

The evil ghost of the wasteland

Today’s timeline Drop The TV show picks up 219 years later in 2296, where Howard is now a Ghoul. He is essentially a zombie who retains his former humanity and resists the craze.

After more than 200 years in the desert, Cooper Howard is no more. Instead, he’s replaced by an expert bounty hunter with no patience for bullshit and no hesitation to do whatever it takes to get what he needs.

Not surprisingly, shortly after Lucy leaves Vault 33, she crosses paths with the Ghoul. The very existence is a stark contrast to his bright, naive optimism.

As the two fight for a bounty that they both seek for different reasons, the Ghoul does not treat Lucy well. In fact, he even tries to sell her organs on the black market.

Here, the character can easily be mistaken for a villain. Despite all his experiences in the wasteland, he’s understandably lost since Cooper Howard’s days.

As the show progresses, his true motives become clear: he is still searching for his family. Given his wife’s involvement with Vault-Tec and the “good” vaults, he believes they are alive.

It’s information she believes Hank MacLean, Lucy’s father and husband, was revealed to be the true villain of the show. After wounding Hank and allowing him to retreat, the stages are set for the next chapter Dropn’s story.

Now Lucy’s whole sense of the world is shattered when she finds out about the atrocities committed by her father. He begins to understand the Ghoul’s cold outlook on life. That bright optimism is no more; the former vault dweller is on the cynical side like the Ghoul.

By the end of the series, the Ghoul isn’t really the villain of Lucy’s story, but instead becomes one of her most valuable allies.
