ExpressVPN, the popular Virtual private network (VPN) company, has announced a major upgrade to its service.

The firm’s own Lightway protocol, which launched in 2020 before becoming open source in 2021, is now getting even better. ExpressVPN says the new version will offer its users a faster, more secure and more reliable experience. It’s also an open-source software currently available on GitHub, meaning anyone can check its code to ensure its safety.

To achieve this, ExpressVPN has rewritten its Lightway protocol from C to Rust. As a result, it’s supposedly much more secure and less vulnerable to attacks compared to the previous version.

Its new code is also simpler and more expressive, allowing for better performance, more battery life and stronger protection. Furthermore, the new code also allows new features to be introduced more easily and quickly while keeping the protocol highly secure.

The current version of the Lightway is already available on ExpressVPN apps for Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, Linux, and routers. The new version of the Lightway will be rolled out across platforms in the coming months, starting with Android, at no extra cost to users.

To ensure you can start using it as soon as possible, follow these steps:

To do so:

  1. Download and install the ExpressVPN app
  2. Open the app and head to the ‘Options’ menu
  3. Under the ‘Protocol’ tab, select ‘Automatic,’ ‘Lightway UDP’ (the fastest one) or ‘Lightway TCP’ (may help you to stay connected in the most challenging network situations)
  4. Then just choose your preferred server and connect

While ExpressVPN promises much with Lightway’s code change, it’s far from the only option on the market. Be sure to check out our list of the Best VPN services to see what else we recommend.
