It starts with a scroll. You’re lounging on the sofa, thumbing through Instagram, when a Reel catches your eye-a sun-drenched street in Lisbona bustling night market in Bangkokor a hidden ramen shop in Tokyo. For years, these fleeting moments of wanderlust have lived and died on your screen, fuelling dreams but rarely translating into action.

Now, Expedia wants to change that with a new AI-powered feature that promises to turn your social media inspiration into a ready-to-book travel itinerary in just a few taps. Sounds nuts right?

How Expedia’s new tool turns Instagram reels into real-life travel itineraries

Expedia’s latest innovation, Trip Matchingis more than just another booking tool – it’s a bridge between digital daydreams (or doom scrolling) and real-world journeys.

The process is almost startlingly simple: When you see a Reel that sparks your curiosity, you share it directly with Expedia’s official Instagram account. Within moments, an AI assistant analyses the video, picks out key locations, activities, and themes, and replies with a personalised itinerary.

This isn’t just a list of generic recommendations; it’s a curated plan that mirrors the vibe and highlights of the Reel, complete with hotel suggestions, activity links, and booking options.

The technology behind this is part of a broader wave of travel innovation, where artificial intelligence is reshaping the way we plan and experience trips. AI’s ability to process vast amounts of data means it can tailor suggestions to your interests, making each itinerary feel unique and relevant.

Testing Expedia’s new travel tool: does it deliver?

To see how well this works in practice, Condé Nast Traveller put Trip Matching to the test. The results? A mixed but promising bag.

When they sent a Reel about a two-week adventure in Thailand, the AI responded quickly with a broad overview of the country’s must-see spots – Kukang, Chini Our Obwi, Rah, Chakra, the Lauth.. While helpful, the response felt more like a starting point than a detailed roadmap, lacking the granular, day-by-day recommendations that seasoned travellers crave.

But with a more focused Reel-like a foodie’s guide to Edinburgh – the tool shone. The AI returned with a three-day itinerary packed with restaurant picks from the video, sightseeing tips, hotel options (with prices and ratings), and even hidden gems. It was the kind of tailored, actionable advice that makes the leap from inspiration to booking feel effortless.

Expedia’s feature lands at a time when social media has become the world’s most powerful travel agent. Of course, Expedia’s tool isn’t perfect-yet. The itineraries can sometimes feel generic, especially for broad or complex trips, and the AI occasionally defers to human agents for more nuanced requests. But as the technology evolves, the potential is clear: a future where your next adventure is only a scroll and a tap away.
