Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. We all know who they are. They’re Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint. And I couldn’t imagine anyone else as them, could you? But, hate it or love it, HBO is pushing ahead with its original Harry Potter seriesand we’ll soon have to get used to seeing new actors in these iconic roles.

The franchise’s Golden Trio have yet to be recast – with UK-wide casting calls currently underway – and we’re unlikely to know who they are when announced. Even if there’s every expectation that they’ll go on to be household names one day. In the meantime, series regulars for the Harry Potter series have been revealed – including Dumbledore, Snape, Hagrid and McGonagall.

Who is in the ‘Harry Potter’ series?

As heavily rumoured, The Lazarus Project’s Paapa Essiedu will play Severus Snapewhile Albus Dumbledore will be performed by the legendary John Lithgow (who’s been in everything from 3rd Rock from the Sun to Killers of the Flower Moon). Ozark’s Janet McTeer will also play Minerva McGonagallwhile Hot Fuzz’s Nick Frost is Rubeus Hagrid. You can also expect guest appearances from Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch.

“We are happy to announce the casting of John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Nick Frost, Luke Thallon and Paul Whitehouse to play Dumbledore, McGonagall, Snape, Hagrid, Quirrell and Filch,” said Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod. “We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life.”

Who else is involved?

The series is described as a “faithful adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter book series” with J.K. Rowling serving as an executive producer. It has been written by Francesca Gardinerwho also has writing credits for His Dark Materials, The Man in the High Castle and was a co-executive producer on Killing Eve. Mark mylod (Ali G Indahouse, The Menu, Succession) will also direct multiple episodes of the series.

When will HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ series release?

HBO’s Harry Potter series is expected to be available to stream in 2026.
