Clubbers are mourning the closure of an iconic London nightclub which will be turned into a 507-room hotel. Tiger Tiger London on Haymarket Street confirmed its closure with a message on its website thanking everyone for “years of incredible memories”.

The site will be turned into an eight-storey hotel fitted with a restaurant and bar, according to a planning application to go to Westminster City Council. While planning permission to turn it into a hotel has been in place for some time, a new application from Centro Planning Consultancy marks the next step in making it happen, as it seeks permission to add an eighth floor and a roof screen.

That application is pending but Tiger Tiger has announced that it is suddenly closing. It is unclear why the club has now closed and whether it is linked to the latest planning application.

Former partygoers have taken to social media to share their disappointment. Guillermo Martorell said the closure represented “the end of an era”. He wrote on X: “Our first club when we went to London in 2009.”

On Facebook, DJ Jazzy D claimed he lost thousands of pounds after Tiger Tiger canceled his event. He wrote: “A few weeks ago we were delighted to announce that Tiger Tiger London was confirmed as the venue for our event. We paid the venue rent, secured a contract and started our campaign to promote the event.

“Within just a few days we sold over 50 percent of the tickets. But last week we received unexpected news: Tiger Tiger London had closed. This prompted us to look for a new venue.

“It was a chaotic moment, and our nerves were shot. Having already paid a few thousand pounds, we didn’t even think about the possibility of losing the money – we just went straight into action to secure a new premises.”

He wrote: “It’s sad that another big nightclub has gone but it wasn’t exactly a surprise when I heard it was done. Will miss it as we still used to get some lively crowds given the context of the decline of London’s nightlife.”

Another said it was sad to see another part of London’s nightlife shut down “even if it was a shady place at best”. Tiger Tiger was fined £120,000 last year after serving caustic soda with tequila shots instead of salt, resulting in four customers being taken to hospital.

The owner of the premises pleaded guilty to four charges under section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in December 2023. The incident took place in December 2021.
