Ed Sheeran has revealed some of his favourite, and worst, places to eat in London in a recent interview with Instagram sensation Topjaw.
For those who aren’t aware of the account, Topjaw is an interview-style channel run by front man Jesse Burgess and camera man Will Warr, who interview chefs, restaurateurs and celebrities in a snappy, quick-fire question format.
One of the latest stars to grace their channel is the one and only Ed Sheeran. Needless to say, it’s quickly become one of their best performing videos to date, with 23k likes and 1.4 million plays.
The Shape of You singer revealed a number of controversial restaurant gripes while being interviewed. When asked about his most overrated restaurant, he criticised traditional fish and chip shops in the capital, explaining that they just don’t work in London unless you can ‘see the sea’.
He said: ‘One of my beliefs is that you should always be able to see the sea when you have fish and chips, so anywhere that does traditional fish and chips in London. It’s like getting sushi in Alabama.’
He also told presented Jesse Burgess that he once ended up eating ‘shirako’ – fish cum – in Japan while dining at an omakase restaurant. ‘I didn’t know before I went there and just ended up eating this testicle of fish cum’, he said.
The singer describes himself as a proper ‘sushi head’, citing Japanese spot The Araki as his favourite restaurant in London.
Sheeran revealed more of his favourite places to eat in the capital, including where to get the best burger (Patty & Bun), and ‘most outrageous value’ spot (Wetherspoons). ‘I used to live in Guildford and the burger with a beer and fries was about £3 then’. Bargain.
However, when asked where he likes to go for cocktails in London, he cited three Michelin-starred Core by Clare Smyth in Notting Hill. Burgess joked: ‘I love the idea of going to a three star restaurant and going ‘I’ll just have a beer!”.
Oh, and his favourite pub is The Devonshire in Soho. Course it is. ‘No one’s allowed to take photos in there [a back room at the pub] so you can just go in and get as slaughtered as you want.’
We’ll remember that next time we’re in there, Ed…
