An everyday kitchen item or a trendy statement, when it comes to kettles there are so many different brands, styles and even designers – yes, Dolce & Gabbana – to choose from. Shoppers with looks at the top of their list may have Smeg on their list.

Hand in hand with other more premium brands such as Dualit, Smeg has become known for its distinctive retro style as much as its water boiling, food cooling and toaster appliances. Its vintage style, pastel colors, and clear branding often come with a hefty price tag, but not if you check out this unlikely retailer.

Debenhams is offering the KLF03 Retro Style Smeg Kettle for £64 cheaper than usual, as it drops the price from £199 to £134. Available in more than 10 different colors and there is an option to match most kitchens, although be weary not all styles have the deep discount.

The main colors on sale are pastel blue, light green and cream which are all reduced to £135, definitely ones that would suit neutrals and pastel fans. Otherwise, the classic gray is £137 and red £140, while the seemingly more popular black and white are £179 – just a 10% saving.

One look at Amazon, a home shopping retailer, and you can see why Debenhams stock is picking up quite quickly. The Prime retailer charges £164 for the exact same model.

We don’t usually go into too much detail on the prices of each color, but given that these stylish kettles have become so much more than their simple function of boiling water. Shoppers are likely to look for particular colors and styles to suit their home, or as Smeg says: “add an aesthetic charm to your kitchen worktop”.

“Today our Smeg kettle arrived and I’m literally blown away. It’s so great to look at but it also has a lot of features… Press the button on the lid to open (opens and snaps back, chrome base, chrome handle, LED indicator lights to select temperature and an optional keep-warm feature,” said a recent Amazon shopper.

Another mentioned its “overpriced” cost while ranting about its features: “This kettle was too expensive but I love it, it’s nice and easy to use, you can tell at a glance how much water is in the kettle when it has boiled it makes a musical sound, so you can’t have a lousy cup of coffee.

“I went for a cream kettle and the chrome handle and base adds to the finishing touch. I would definitely recommend the only catch is you also want the matching toaster.” If you want to match your kettle and toaster, Debenhams happen to have this bundle for £275.

But not all Smeg shoppers seemed completely happy with their purchase. Reviews of the same kettle on Amazon say: “Love the look but not very practical.

“Very heavy, noisy, takes a long time to boil and difficult to read water indicator due to the position of the handle… had a family over the weekend thinking about buying one. After seeing and using it, they changed their mind.”

While another shopper said: “Both my SMEG kettle and toaster died within a year… totally worthless. I’m back to just £30.” If you were looking for £30 ones, like this shopper, alternative retailer Dunelm is selling a similar pastel-style ribbed kettle for £25
