DC Comics has announced Absolute Power, a new event starring Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, which fans already think may herald the return of the Justice League.

DC has been dabbling in smaller events for the past year or so as the Dawn of DC initiative has taken center stage. Now, the company is getting ready for its first massive event in nearly two years, which kicks off with its long-teased Free Comic Book Day special.

The last event, Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths, saw the Justice League believed dead and set the stage for a new generation of heroes to lead.

Announced at the 2024 ComicsPRO convention, DC has now revealed Absolute Power, the event that promises to bring Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman back together.

Will Absolute Power bring back the Justice League?

Absolute Power is the first truly massive event since Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths. DC has been focused on the Dawn of DC initiative, which saw fan favorites and new heroes take center stage as the Justice League and DC’s Big Three – Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman – largely stepped out of the spotlight.

For the past year and a half, the Titans have been DC’s preeminent superteam, while events were limited to smaller-scale (though still undeniably big) affairs such as Knight Terrors and Beast World. Absolute Power looks to be shifting the scale of power back to focus on the Big Three and could be setting up for what many have viewed as inevitable: the return of the classic Big 7 iteration of the Justice League.

It’s still early days with not a lot known about Absolute Power, but we do know that it spins out of the current Failsafe story occurring in Batman and the upcoming House of Brainiac story in Superman. Here’s what DC has to say about it on its blog:

Helmed by the critically-acclaimed duo of writer Mark Waid and artist Dan Mora, this four-issue series launches July 2 and shows how Waller will use the strategic and military might of Failsafe and the otherworldly technology of the Brainiac Queen to steal all metahuman abilities from every super hero and super-villain around the globe, a threat so dire it will take the combined efforts of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and the Super Heroes of the DC Universe to defeat it.

DC Comics Absolute Power reading guide

Absolute Power consists of a whopping 25 issues, consisting of a main series and several mini-series tie-ins. All of them are slated to be penned by legendary comics writer Mark Waid, with Waid and Batman/Superman: World’s Finest artist Dan Mora teaming up for the main Absolute Power run.

No release date has been indicated for most of the event, and the schedule of previous events like Knight Terrors and Beast World indicates Absolute Power may see books shipping multiple times a month. As of this writing, only cover art for the Free Comic Book Day special and Ground Zero have been revealed.
