Forget the tasted fillings. With regard to sandwich, the British keep it classic!
To celebrate the British sandwich week (May 19-25), the canteen’s supply service Hellofresh explored 1,000 UK adults to reveal the country’s favorite of all time, and the results are anything but complex.
Simplicity takes the crown, with classic choices such as cheese, bacon, tuna and egg mayonnaise, which exceeds the list. As lunch time rolls around, it is clear that the British prefer to the sandwich and full of classic flavors.

The humble cheese sandwich dominates the highest in the United Kingdom’s favorite filling, with 37% of the participants name its lunch time choice. Cheese also turned out to be particularly popular with Gen Z, and 45% of younger respondents chose it as their best selection of sandwich.
Closely behind is Baco, a fatter favorite that captured 37% of the votes. It was particularly popular among men, and more than two fifths (42%) chose less than one third of women (32%).
Third is classic egg mayonnaise, which is recommended almost third (32%) and almost two fifths of women (38%). Egg and Cress also made a solid exhibition, and a quarter (25%) of those studied were named their favorite.
Obviously, each city has its own favorite when it comes to a perfect sandwich filler. In Edinburgh (33%) and Southampton (36%), tasted cheese and pickles are at the top. At the same time, cities such as Liverpool (44%) and Newcastle (42%) prefer to show the classic taste of tuna.
Britain’s least favorite sandwich toppings in the UK
The study also revealed some sandwiches that not only do surgery for many British at lunch. The least popular list is JAM, and only 13% is called its favorite. The peanut butter is 14%, which refers to the classic American peanut butter combination and jam is not quite attached to the UK.
Other less beloved fillers include throat (15%) and shrimp (19%). Interestingly, shrimp is still a hit for people over 65, and in this age group 27% chose it as the best choice. In all countries, the rapes also lowered to low 19 %.
Hellofresh’s senior recipe development manager, Mimi Morley commented,
“It is fascinating to see how nation’s sandwich preferences still celebrate simple and timeless flavors. Although dining trends often have a bold and adventurous taste, the study clearly shows that these do not often stick to classic, comforting flavors such as cheese or egg mayonnaise.
“These staples are clearly resonated for generations and prove that less is really more about lunch -like favorites!”
