In what seems like the best decision for the sake of the show, actor Chance Perdomo’s role as Andre Anderson in Gen V will not be recast with a new actor in the wake of his tragic death in a motorcycle accident at age 27 this past March.

His death came immediately before a table reading for season 2, and he was going to be an essential part of the season, but now the Gen V producers have announced that they will “recraft” season 2 rather than recast Andre:

“As we continue to navigate the tragic loss of Chance Perdomo, everyone at Gen V is determined to find the best way to pay respect to his memory,” the statement said. “We won’t be recasting the role, because no one can replace Chance. Instead, we have been taking the time and space to recraft our Season 2 storylines as we begin production in May. We will honor Chance and his legacy this season.”

While it does happen at times, we have seen other high profile cases of actor deaths resulting in massive storyline changes rather than recasting them. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever wrote Chadwick Boseman’s passing in to be the core focus of the storyline as his sister took on the mantle of Black Panther, for instance.

As for how Perdomo’s character will be written out, we don’t know that yet. I don’t know if it would be appropriate to do something like “Andre was murdered offscreen!” even if the storyline is that the core group, including Andre, are imprisoned by Vought right now. Other times actor deaths are not written into the story as deaths, like Fast and the Furious “retiring” Paul Walker’s character in the wake of his passing, so perhaps something like that could happen here.

Gen V seso 2 production will still begin in May, ahead of The Boys’ premiere on June 13. A recent trailer for the season showed that Gen V characters Cate and Sam would appear in the season, but we don’t know if Perdomo was meant to, which would likely have been something that was already filmed.

Gen V was a big hit for Amazon, and secured a second season as a result. The Boys continues to be one of Amazon’s top franchises and its likely both shows have a long road ahead of them, in addition to other spin-offs that were made.

It’s deeply tragic what happened to Gen V’s Perdomo but I have no doubt that the cast and crew will end up handling his passing respectfully in the way they incorporate it into the next season.
