In a further step to drive sustainable growth and boost the knowledge economy, the Cambridge Growth Company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with its Advisory Council, including the four locally elected political leaders.
The Cambridge Growth Company was established by central government as a subsidiary of Homes England. The Memorandum of Understanding it co-produced, with the input of political leaders and others, reflects the Government’s wish to understand issues from a local perspective and to work collaboratively.
The agreement, signed on 12 February, builds on a long history of broad and collaborative governance structures established in the region. Peter Freeman, appointed Chair by the Housing Minister, is leading the Cambridge Growth Company in its mission to align physical and economic expansion with sustainability and innovation.
The Advisory Council comprises the elected leaders from Cambridge City Council, South Cambridgeshire District Council and Cambridgeshire County Council, alongside the Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Their participation and advice will ensure that the voices of local communities remain at the heart of growth initiatives.
In addition to the elected leaders, three additional members have been appointed due to their outstanding expertise, to provide further guidance. Baroness Sally Morgan, renowned for her contributions to education and health; Dr. Paul Leinster, CBE an authority on water resources and water quality and Dr. Diarmuid O’Brien, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Innovation committed to delivering innovation and enterprise in Cambridge, will bring their vast knowledge to shape a resilient and forward-thinking strategy.
Peter Freeman, Chairman of the Cambridge Growth Company, said:
This agreement is an important milestone in Cambridge’s growth journey.
By bringing together a coalition of elected leaders and expert advisors, we are creating a robust and united approach to sustainable development, ensuring that Greater Cambridge remains a global leader in innovation and economic excellence.
The Cambridge Growth Company will now move forward with implementing strategic initiatives designed to enhance infrastructure, bring forward housing delivery, foster innovation, create beautiful places and support the region’s growing knowledge economy. With sustainability and inclusivity at its core, this agreement lays the foundation for long-term prosperity in Greater Cambridge and beyond.
