Whenever anybody visits London, chances are someone recommends them to go and try one of Brick Lane’s famous beigels. There are two big players in this game, the yellow shopfront and the white shopfront, with most Londoners having a favourite they will vehemently defend.

Today (February 14), however, it seems that the former of these establishments, Brick Lane Beigel Shop (which is the oldest Beigel shop on Brick Lane) has closed its doors in mysterious circumstances. As reported in The Evening Standard, a number of social posts claimed that a “writ of possession” note had been stuck to the doors, but upon a later visit by the paper, a note from the owners read that the closure was down to necessary ‘electrical maintenance’.

The shop also posted a note on its Instagram media page, which reads: “Dear Beigel Family, We will be closed for a short period of time to conduct electrical maintenance. Stay connected with us on social media for updates and news about our reopening.

“Thank you for your support. We’ll be back before you know it, ready to bake and serve our beigel family with love.”

Yesterday (February 13), images were shared of a “writ of possession” notice, showing a High Court order, which can be seen below. This means that, should this note be legitimate, High Court Enforcement Officers have the legal authority to gain possession of the premises.

So for now, only the ‘other’ Beigel shop is open (the ‘white’ Beigel Bake Brick Lane Bakery), and the ‘yellow Beigel shop’ is closed – many will be be hoping the beloved shop can reopen after standing strong since 1855. Let’s hope the two old London institutions can continue to coexist as normal in the coming days!
