Local theater group Something Underground’s calm – and sweary – one-woman play about “sex, seduction and survival” returns this Fringe.

Written and directed by Jonathan Brown, the gripping play takes us back to 19th century Brighton, when the Prince Regent began visiting the town, sparking a boom in the prostitution market. And we thought Harry was a naughty prince.

Set against the hidden underworld of Brighton, the story of the eponymous Betsy hovers over her life now and as she grows up. Imogen Strachan has taken over from Isabella McCarthy-Somerville, bringing to life a cast of typically unknown characters that have gone from bubbly to cold.

This time, the spine-tingling musical soundscapes staged at the Hanover Community Center help everyone to awaken a fascinating, often forgotten underworld.

We saw the play for the first time during its sell-out run in 2019 and again in 2022, when they won the International Fringe Encore award – and a recommendation from BOTI.

Want more Prince Regent era tricks? The company also puts The Silent Stream (The Wisdom of the Whore of Brighton, Part 1) at the Hanover Community Center on Saturday, May 18.

Written and performed by Jonathan Brown, this raunchy first volume tells the true adventures of how the hedonistic Prince Regent, aka George IV, aka the OG party prince, arrived in Brighton, feasted on the town’s women and battled nature to build his pavilion.

Friday 17 – Sunday 19 May; in different times; from £12
