While not as difficult as Team Rocket’s big bad Giovanni, Arlo will still put up a good fight.

Found at PokéStops and Team Rocket Balloons, tracking Arlo down can be a pain – so when you do, you need to make it count.

That’s where we come in with our best Arlo counters and strategies to help you defeat the pesky Team Rocket Leader.

While we know which Pokémon Arlo will start with, rounds two and three can feature different ones. Additionally, while we know the options, there is no way of knowing which one you will go up against.

So, we have covered all variations of the Arlo battle here, so you stand the best chance of emerging victorious. Here is what you will need to know about what you will be up against.

First round

  • Shadow Cacnea (a Bug and Poison-type Pokémon, weak against Fire, Flying, Rock and Psychic-type moves)

Second round

  • Shadow Charizard (a Fire and Flying-type Pokémon, weak against Rock, Electric and Water-type moves)
  • Shadow Hypno (a Psychic-type Pokémon, weak against Bug, Ghost and Dark moves)
  • Shadow Golurk (a Ground and Ghost-type Pokémon, weak against Ghost, Water and grass moves)

Third round

  • Shadow Scizor (a Bug and Steel-type Pokémon, weak against Fighting, Fairy, Ground, Bug, Steel, Water and Grass-type moves)
  • Shadow Dragonite (a Dragon and Flying-type Pokémon, weak against Ice movies)
  • Shadow Salamence (a Dragon and Flying-type Pokémon, weak against Ice movies)

To take this battle on, we advise using either a Fire or Ice-type for Cacnea in round one. Something like a Glaceon or Houndoom will do the job.

For round two, Tyrnanitar is one of the strongest picks for the multitude of options that follow, and then finally utilise either Houndoom or Glaceon again for whatever final pick is thrown out.

Remember, Ice is strong against Dragon-types and Fire is strong against Steel-types. For a solid back-up, Mewtwo will help get the fight over the line.

It’s also worth noting that you can re-pick your team after losing to Arlo once, by opting for a rematch at the same location, which should mean that Arlo makes the same picks again – this time, you’ll know who you’re up against, so you can make your picks more wisely.

Best Cacnea counters in Pokémon Go

You should not have too much trouble when you take on Cacnea, but if you want to get the job done fast, we recommend using Fire, Flying, Poison, Bug or Ice moves.

Best Charizard counters in Pokémon Go

Charizard is a Fire and Flying-type Pokémon that is weak to Rock, Electric and Water-type moves.

Water and Rock in particular are the most effective, so a Kabutops, Omastar or Tyranitar are good choices. The former two have both Water and Rock, so are especially useful.

Best Hypno counters in Pokémon Go

Hypno is a Psychic-type Pokémon that is weak against Bug, Ghost and Dark moves, so use them to your advantage.

We like Houndoom for this part, as not only does it have the Fire-type moves for Cacnea in round one and potentially Scizor in round three, but its Dark attack Foul Play will be great against Hypno.

Best Golurk counters in Pokémon Go

The final possibility that Arlo will use in round two is a Golurk, which is weak against Ghost, Water, Grass, Ice and Dark moves. So there are lots of attacks to pick from.

Tyranitar would be our number one with attacks like Smack Down and Stone Edge. Snorlax is another good alternative, with Body Slam able to do decent damage.

Best Scizor counters in Pokémon Go

Reshiram is by far the best bet for a Scizor takedown, but, failing that, there are others that you can choose – including Chandelure, Charizard, Blaziken and Moltres. So take your pick.

But essentially, any Pokemon that can handle itself in a fight and is equipped with Fighting, Fairy, Ground, Bug, Steel, Water or Grass moves should give this one a run for its money.

Best Dragonite counters in Pokémon Go

Dragonite is one of the tougher options that can appear. Being a Dragon and Flying-type Pokémon, Dragon, Rock and Fairy moves will be effective, but Ice is particularly strong, so go for that over everything else.

A Glaceon that knows Frost Breath or Avalanche will be great, or alternatively, an Alolan Sandslash with Powder Snow or Ice Punch will equally see off Dragonite in no time.

Best Salamence counters in Pokémon Go

Salamence is similar to Dragonite and just as dangerous, weak to Ice, Dragon, Rock and Fairy moves.

Again, go for Ice to whittle down its health. Glaceon, Alolan Sandslash or even a Mamoswine or Mewtwo with Ice moves are all suitable. Just be careful of its Draco Meteor move.
