A festival celebrating South East Asian culture and food is coming to Battersea this month, with street food, top chefs and a chance to play traditional childhood games. CelebrASIA is coming to London from 13-15 September to take visitors on a journey through Southeast Asia.
The event is free and will take place at Battersea Power Station. The vibrant festival will feature a variety of activities, including traditional food from top chefs, live performances and fun workshops. There’s something for everyone, whether it’s trying street food or learning a new craft.
Battersea Power Station has partnered with the ASEAN Ten Missions in London to host the festival. The aim is to showcase the rich cultural heritage of Southeast Asia through an immersive experience.
Some of London’s top South East Asian chefs and eateries will be there, such as Mandy Yin from Sambal Shiok and Malaysia’s Roti King. Kasa and Kin will offer Filipino desserts, and Kopi House will serve Singaporean drinks.
Popular street food vendors include Malaysia’s Eat Lah and Pandan Bakery, Thailand’s Yaay Yaay and Vietnam’s Hanoi Kitchen. Visitors can also enjoy unique alcoholic and non-alcoholic Southeast Asian beverages from colorful trucks.
Inside the power plant, Turbin Hall B will become a craft market selling everything from spices to housewares. There will be clothes from Singaporean designer Baju by Oniatta, and other handmade products from the region.
In Turbinhall A, creative visitors can take part in bookable art and craft workshops. Sessions are available for all ages on Saturday and Sunday, offering hands-on activities.
Children can take part in the interactive Grand Tour around the power station, learning about Southeast Asia through fun quizzes and activities. They will even get a souvenir passport stamped at the end of their trip.
Outside in Power Station Park, there will be live performances from groups such as the Thai Music Circle and the Indonesian Embassy’s Angklung Orchestra. DJ sets and traditional dance performances will also take place.
At Malaysia Square, visitors can try traditional childhood games from across Southeast Asia. These include Filipino “Tumbang preso” and Malaysian “Tuju Selipar”, which offer a taste of the region’s playful culture.
CelebrASIA runs Friday 11-21, Saturday 10-21 and Sunday 11-18. Art and craft sessions and children’s activities are on Saturday and Sunday at 10.00-17.00.
