Audi a1 review car reviews

Looks

The A1 comes in both three and fivedoor versions and has everything you’d expect to see on Audi’s larger cars stylish front LED lights, the bold Audi grill and modern lines along the sides. This is a sleek, attractive package and we think it’s one of the most appealing small cars you can buy.

Practicality

Even the fivedoor Sportback isn’t the most spacious small car, with a boot not much bigger than a Mini’s. There’s not much space in the back seats, while the rear seats don’t fold completely flat when you need extra boot space. Getting into the back in the threedoor car is tricky and the sloping roof line limits rear headroom.

Driving

You’ve got no shortage of engine choices and they’re all quiet, while offering plenty of power. Although the A1 is an easy car to drive with light controls, the firm ride you’ll find in the Sport and S line models can feel too hard over bumps, so go for the entry level SE models if you’re looking for more comfort.

Safety

This may be the smallest Audi, but six air bags have helped earn it five stars in Euro NCAP crash tests and you can opt for the same safety technology that you’ll find on larger, more expensive Audi models.

Running costs

The A1 is a premium supermini making it quite costly to buy, especially when you add on options like Bluetooth and satellite navigation, but it won’t lose as much value as many of its rivals. All the engines are fairly economical: the 1.6 litre diesel should give you an impressive 74mpg. We like the 1.4 litre petrol engine, which cleverly shuts down a couple of its cylinders when they’re not needed to save fuel.

GH verdict

The Audi A1 feels upmarket and is fun to drive. We like the 1.4 TFSI Sport for its combination of power and economy, but be aware of that harder ride, which may not suit you.

Also consider

Volkswagen Mini or Citroen DS3
