After dangling the carrot for over five years, Coldplay have finally announced that they’ll be releasing a short film later this month. A Film for the Future will be a 44-minute ‘visual companion’ to their most recent album, Moon Musicand will premiere on YouTube on January 22. But what’s better than watching it on a television, I hear you ask? Having it splashed across four walls as part of a 360-degree immersive experience, of course.

Perched comfortably in the middle of the Venn diagram depicting London’s cinemas and art galleries is Lightroom. Blurring the line between exhibition space and full-blown theatrical production venue, Lighroom may sound familiar to you, as they’ve been truly delivering the goods over the past few years.

They’ve hosted the likes of ‘The Moonwalkers: A Journey With Tom Hanks’, ‘David Hockney: Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away)’, and ‘Vogue: Inventing the Runway’. But now it’s Coldplay’s turn to be projected onto those high-tech walls, as Lightroom will be showing a limited run of immersive screenings of A Film for the Future. And tickets are being snapped up as we speak.

Coldplay – A Film for the Future

Coldplay first teased the prospect of a visual project back in 2019 on the artwork for their album, Everyday Life. It was alluded to again last year, but was officially announced this week. A Film for the Future will be a ‘fan-led’ project, featuring the artwork of over 150 visual artists from 45 different countries.

Each artist was given a short audio snippet from Moon Musicand asked to create a corresponding piece of artwork. They were given no artistic direction and had no knowledge of the other artist’s creations, meaning that each piece of art will be truly unique. The film will combine the artwork, and Lightroom’s state-of-the-art technology and 11 metre-high projection walls will allow viewers to step inside the pieceand fully immerse themselves in it.

Executive producer, Ben Morhas hailed the result “a kaleidoscopic patchwork quilt – a 44 minute multimedia tapestry.” He went on to say: “It was a huge privilege to have the bird’s eye view of such an ambitious project, working with so many incredible animators and filmmakers all working independently of each other. The final film is simply jaw-dropping and I can’t wait for Coldplay’s fans to see it.”

Coldplay said: “We’re extremely grateful to all the amazing artists who lent their visual genius to this film. They’ve made something very beautiful and we’re extremely proud of it.”

The exclusive Lightroom screenings of A Film for the Future will start on January 22 and will run on selected dates until February 21. Find out more and book your tickets here.
