I know it may be hard to believe, but it turns out that affordable train travel does actually still exist. And it just so happens that Europe is preparing to welcome yet another cheap and cheerful rail route as we speak. That’s right, folks: there’s a new kid on the block train track, and it’s set to transport passengers between two of Europe’s most popular cities for less than the price you’d pay for a pint in central London. Not bad, hey?
The shiny new service, hailed ‘the EasyJet of railways’ will connect the capital cities of Amsterdam and Berlin for just €10 (£8ish). Operated by Dutch company, GoVoltathe low-cost locomotive is on track to be up and running by September – with more routes to follow after that.
GoVolta’s new train service
GoVolta was founded by entrepreneurs, Hessel Winkleman and Maarten Bastian. The company aims to revolutionise cross-border train travelmaking it more accessible and a whole lot more affordable. GoVolta has pledged that at least 110 tickets on every service will cost under €10. With other rail operators offering the same route for between £31 and £213, the new offering is an undeniable bargain. The slight catch, however, is that GoVolta’s route won’t be high-speed. The journey will take around eight hours, compared the six hours it takes on other services. Swings and roundabouts, I suppose.
No exact timetable has been released yet, but the service will supposedly depart in the early morning and arrive in the afternoon; leaving plenty of time for exploring. Tickets for services between Amsterdam and Berlin are set to go on sale later this month, and by 2027, GoVolta is aiming to offer additional connecting routes to the likes of Copenhagen, Basel, Paris, Bruges, Hamburg, and Frankfurt. It all sound rail-y great to me, that’s for sure.
GoVolta’s is aiming to launch the new train service in September 2025 and tickets are set to go on sale later in January. Keep a beady eye on their website for updates.
