If you (like me) are rather keen on the idea of paying a visit to Japanbut neither your bank balance or annual leave allowance are quite as aligned with the vision, fear not. Because for one weekend each month, you won’t need to hop on an eye-wateringly expensive long-haul flight to be transported to the streets of Tokyo; a trusty trip on the Tube will suffice.

That’s right, folks – on the third weekend of every month, Coal Drops Yard is filled to the brim with the sights, sounds, tastes and traditions of Japan as it transforms into a shōtengai street market. Paying homage to the vibrant markets that regularly fill the streets of Japan with independent and family-run market stalls; London’s monthly shōtengai sees a selection of carefully curated businesses and stalls take to the cobbled streets of Coal Drops Yard.

A plethora of stalls set up shop for the occasion, offering everything from food and fashion to textiles and trinkets. You can pick a unique gift, find something gorgeous to decorate your home with, or sample a whole host of scrumptious Japanese delicacies.

The venders are constantly changing so it’s difficult to say what you can expect to find, but I suppose that’s one of the best things about it. You could visit the market every month, and still find something new each time. From mochi and matcha to onigiri and okonomiyaki; there’s something delicious to dig in to at every turn.

The shōtengai market at Coal Drops Yard was initially created temporarily in 2021 to celebrate the Tokyo Olympics. But it was so popular, it has carried on ever since. As well as showcasing some brilliant independent businesses, the market aims to put an emphasis on building bonds between the businesses, too; much like they do at the authentic shōtengais in Japan. The next shōtengai is taking place in mid-Juneand you certainly won’t want to mis(o) it.

The next shōtengai market is taking place at Coal Drops Yard from June 12 – June 15. Find out more and plan your visit here.

📍 Lower Stable Street, Coal Drops Yard, N1C 4DQ.
