London Restaurant Openings: July 2024

Goodbye Horses, Islington

It’s a big month for culinary duo Alex Young and George de Vos, who have three openings launching within a restored pub building in Islington. First up is a coffee shop called Day Trip, followed by a wine bar and restaurant called Goodbye Horses, which is set to open its doors at the end of July. The kitchen will be helmed by ex-Papi chef Jack Coggins, with a seasonal menu featuring dishes like chicken fat and sardine toast; Cornish crab blini; and baby leeks with green garlic and hazelnut. Wine will be a key focus too, with a list curated by director Nathalie Nelles, focused around organic and biodynamic varieties.

Kaso, Shoreditch

East London hotel One Hundred Shoreditch has just opened its doors to a new rooftop bar and restaurant, Kaso. Perched on the hotel’s seventh floor, the eatery is centered around Eastern Mediterranean cuisine, offering small plates and cocktails – plus impressive city views. When creating the menu, chef Ilknur Celik was inspired by her upbringing in Istanbul: diners can expect a selection of hot and cold mezzes alongside seafood fare, grilled meat and veggies. Highlights include octopus with samphire and grilled mackerel, roast aubergine with zhoug and tahini, and lamb cutlets with fig and pistachio salsa. It’s set to be a treat for the eyes as well as the tastebuds, with pink marble decor, lush foliage and a pretty al fresco terrace.

A raw bar will display a selection of seafood – Scottish scallops, Carlingford oysters, Cornish crabs – alongside dishes like Glamorgan pork croquette with toffee apple sauce and barbecued razor clams with baked garlic. Engel and Jang, City of London

One of the big new London restaurant openings for July comes from restaurateur Des Gunewardena, who has opened his first culinary concept under his recently launched hospitality company D3 Collective. Now open at the Royal Exchange is Engel & Jang, set on the mezzanine level of the historic building. There are two distinct concepts: Engel, a 1920s Berlin-inspired cocktail bar, and Jang, an intimate restaurant focused around Korean and Japanese cuisine. The former will serve vintage cocktails alongside an Austrian/German bar menu, with a space for cabaret and private events. Jang, meanwhile, will offer a menu from chef Dana Choi, who has previously worked with renowned Korean chef Judy Joo.
